Prison Warder Learnerships | Prison warders or otherwise known as correctional service officers mainly work in prisons and jails throughout South Africa. Their main work objectives are to guard, oversee and manage the people who are in prison, known as inmates. Prison warders will also arrange, secure and provide facilities to these inmates. They ensure all receive equal treatment, and access to studying and all dealings are in accordance with prison regulations. Every year the DCS offers Prison Warder Learnerships for South Africans.
Prison wardens are also responsible for overseeing all work, education and relaxation activities for inmates. They monitor all situations and react accordingly to ensure a safe environment for all. They are also responsible for providing procedures and support in any crisis situation including natural disasters, emergencies and riots. Additionally, they also monitor staff performance, maintain records and other office duties.
Prison Warder Learnerships Available
Learnerships in this field include both practical and theoretical training. The most commonly run for a 12-month period unless stated otherwise. Selected candidates usually receive a monthly stipend and during their theoretical training also a uniform, all training material, accommodation, and meals as part of their learnership package. Nonetheless, when candidates attend their practical training they need to supply their own meals, accommodation, and transport.

Prison Warder Learnerships Requirements
Every candidate applying to learnerships in this field must possess all the requirements as stipulated by the company. We have compiled a list of the basic stipulations you can see below. Some companies may have more stipulations that must be met and applicants must meet them all to be eligible.
Basic stipulations are:
- Candidates must be South African citizens
- You must have a valid ID book, document or card proving citizenship
- Must be older than 21 and younger than 35
- Applicants must have a Grade 12 certificate
- You must not have any criminal record
- Applicants must be proficient in the English language
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted and may be requested to attend an interview or psychometric assessments. Applicants must be willing to submit to a fingerprint check and background check.
